1.Academic Activities

Education

Various courses are taught at the University which aim in human rights education and the promotion of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue as a means to gain an active/democratic citizenship.

At the Department of International and European Studies, the modules of “International Protection of Human Rights” and “Intercultural Educational Policy” are taught.

Training (short-term)/Research

The supervision and overview of internships at the UNESCO Chair are the sole responsibility of the Director of the UNESCO Chair, Prof. P. Naskou-Perraki. The internees at the UNESCO Chair are divided into three working groups. The tasks of each Working Group are the following:

a) The first working group, known as the “Group of Journalists”, consists of 2nd year students who publish the UNESCO news every 3 months. The task of the students is to gather all necessary information in order to inform the academic society and the public with regard to the activities of UNESCO all over the world and the activities of the Hellenic National Commission. The first issue was very successful and the President of the Hellenic Commission, Mrs. Tzitzikosta, has promised to provide us with webspace on the website of the Hellenic National Commission in order to upload the issues online.

b) The second working group consists of 4th year students, who are in the process of preparing a book on UNESCO in Greek. The content of the book will present the Constitution, the structure and the activities. The book will be published by the end of this year under my supervision.

c) The third working group consists of third and fourth year students who are collecting all conventions that have been adopted by UNESCO, as well as the UNESCO Conventions that have been ratified by Greece. This book will be published soon and Mrs. Tzitzikosta has offered to cover all publishing expenses.

Educational Student Conference

The Director of UNESCO Chair, Professor P. Naskou-Perraki, has organised a student conference under the name Thessaloniki International Student Model United Nations (ThessISMUN) which serves as a simulation of the United Nations and other international organisations. The aim of ThessISMUN is to promote the goals of the United Nations as they are enshrined by the Charter of the United Nations. ThessISMUN 2008 was held from 30th April to 4th May 2008 and it gathered students from all Greek Universities and Universities from all over the world eager to address the contemporary challenges to international peace and security and to show their diplomatic skills. ThessISMUN 2008 was dedicated to Dr, Drhc Erika Daes (http://sites.mgkworld.net/thessis08/main.php).

 

2. Conferences/Meetings

The Director of the UNESCO Chair, Professor P. Naskou-Perraki has been invited to speak on the activities of UNESCO and the UNESCO Chair of the University of Macedonia to conferences and other organised events, and has organised conferences with the aim of promoting the goals of the United Nations.

14 November 2007, Professor P. Naskou-Perraki was the keynote speaker at a conference organised by the Society of People with Disabilities in Drama, Greece. She delivered a speech on the ‘Disabled people and how they are protected by International Human Rights Law’.

19 March 2008, Professor P. Naskou-Perraki as a keynote speaker delivered a lecture on the ‘Rights of Disabled children and Mass Media’ at a conference organised by the General Secretariat of Information and Communication.

2 May 2008, the UNESCO Chair under the direction and supervision of the Director of the UNESCO Chair, Professor P. Naskou-Perraki organised a Conference to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with guest speakers Mr. David Roosevelt, the grandson of the late President Roosevelt and Elinor Roosevelt, and Dr, Drhc Erika Daes and Professor K. Koufa as moderator within the framework of ThessISMUN with the participation of 450 students from all over the world. The event was very successful and extremely celebrated by the Greek mass media.

15 May 2008, Professor P. Naskou-Perraki was invited by the Centre UNESCO for the Balkan women to deliver a speech to a panel on women on “Women’s rights in the Mediterranean area, a comparative study on the protection of women in Europe and the Arab world”.

16 May 2008, Professor P. Naskou-Perraki was the keynote speaker to an event organised by a Greek woman’s organisation (“Lykio Ellinidon”) on “The protection of maternity and the rights of children”.

24 June 2008, Professor P. Naskou-Perraki was invited at the International Conference organised in Athens by the General Secretarial of Communication and I delivered a speech on “The children’s rights and Mass Media”.

30 June – 3 July 2008, Professor P. Naskou-Perraki was appointed by the National Committee on Human Rights as a representative of the aforementioned Committee at the 3rd World Forum on Human Rights held in Nantes, France.

3. Interuniversity Exchanges/Partnerships

Ø      Undergraduate and postgraduate students of other Universities, i.e. Aristotle University, are welcomed every year as internees at UNESCO Chair.

The UNESCO Chair established in 2008 the “Publications of UNESCO Chair University of Macedonia- Director: P. Naskou-Perraki”. The following books were published or are due to be published in 2008:

IV. Outcomes

The progress of the UNESCO Chair in Intercultural Policy for an Active Citizenship and Solidarity has been steady during the last two years. The Director of the UNESCO Chair has been active in organising conferences, establishing the “Publications of UNESCO Chair University of Macedonia- Director: P. Naskou-Perraki”, supervising the work of student internees, and raising awareness regarding intercultural policies and the protection of human rights as a means to active and democratic citizenship.

The Director of UNESCO Chair aims in establishing networks towards promoting human rights for a democratic citizenship by reaching out to policy-makers, professionals (i.e. educators, teachers, lawyers, etc.) and civil society.
