    “Human Rights Protection in Europe with emphasis on Refugee law”

    2630 August, 2016 – Thessaloniki

    Organized by the UNESCO Chair of Intercultural Policy for an Active Citizenship and Solidarity at the University of Macedonia 

    We would like to inform you about the International Summer School in English that we are organizing at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, Greece on 26-30 August 2016. Our summer school is about “the protection of human rights in Europe” and is organized by the UNESCO Chair of the Department of International and European Studies of the University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Greece. The academic faculty of the summer school consists of University professors and experts from all over Greece and the EU.

    The UNESCO summer school will begin on Friday, August 26 in the afternoon and will end on Tuesday, August 30 in the evening. It will take place at the Conference Hall of the University of Macedonia.  It will last 40 hours with a focus on the protection of human rights in Europe and more specifically:

    International and Regional Mechanisms of Human Rights Protection with emphasis on Refugee Law

    • International human rights protection mechanisms (International Covenants and International Conventions), taught by f. Professor P. Naskou Perraki (University of Macedonia).

    European Convention on Human Rights

    • European Convention on Human Rights, taught by Dr. Dagmara Dajska, expert of the Council of Europe, who will discuss  the right to a fair trial and the right to asylum,
    • Freedom of Expression, taught by Prof. I. Papadopoulos (University of Macedonia)

    Fundamental Human Rights in EU and the Protection of Personal Data

    • EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, taught by Prof. L. Papadopoulou (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki),
    • Protection of Personal Data by Prof. E. Alexandropoulou (University of Macedonia).

    Prohibition of Discrimination and especially the Rights of LGBT

    • Prohibition of discrimination, taught by Prof. D. Anagnostopoulou (University of Macedonia),
    • LGBT Rights, taught by Prof. Alina Tryfonidoy (Reading University).

    Refugees, Minorities and Cultural Rights

    •  Protection of minorities and cultural rights, taught by Dr. Nikos Gaitenidis, Head of the Observatory on Constitutional Values of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, and
    • Workshop on intercultural skills, taught by Prof. I. Papavasileiou (University of Macedonia).

    The tuition fee is EUR 250 and only EUR 200 for Greek students. The tuition fee includes: the participation cost, the cost of all the distributed documents, the coffee breaks, as well as the exams and certificates.     Protection of Human Rights in Europe with emphasis on Refugee Rights

    The Summer Academy lasts a duration of 40 hours with a focus on the protection of human rights in Europe with emphasis on the Rights of Refugees:
    · International human rights protection mechanisms with an emphasis on refugees (International Covenants and International Conventions), taught by f. Professor P. Naskou Perraki (University of Macedonia, Greece)
    · European Convention on Human Rights by Dr. Dagmara Rajska, expert of the Council of Europe, who will discuss the right for fair trial and the right to asylum (Poland),
    · Freedom of Expression by Prof. I. Papadopoulos (University of Macedonia),
    · Protection of Personal Data by Prof. E. Alexandropoulou (University of Macedonia),
    · EU Charter of Fundamental Rights by Prof. L. Papadopoulou (Aristotle University of Macedonia, Greece),
    · Prohibition of discrimination by Prof. D. Anagnostopoulou (University of Macedonia, Greece),

    Associate Professor Dr. Despina Anagnostopoulou, Academic Coordinator of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and Director of the UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Policy for an Active Citizenship and Solidarity at the University of Macedonia.

    Target group

    University Students, lawyers, judges, political scientists, teachers, journalists and professionals dealing with refugees and migrants

    Course aim

    1. a) To enhance knowledge on Human Rights Protection by international conventions and covenants as well by the European Convention of Human Rights and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, focusing on refugee rights,cultural rights and intercultural skills, b) to study in an international environment and c) to combine the summer school with morning trips to Ancient and Byzantine Thessaloniki.

    After a multiple choice examination, a certificate for 3 Extracurricular ECTS will be granted

    Fee 1 EUR 190: For University Students until 25 May 2017. After that date, tuition is 240. Reduction of 10% on each registration on combined registration of 2 participants and 20% for 3 participants. Social events are paid separately. Special rates at Thessaloniki hotels. Assistance for excursions to Halkidiki and the islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos.
    Fee 2 EUR 250: For professionals or other participants who are not University students until 25 May 2017 after that date tuition is 280 euros

    Reductions of 10% on tuition is granted for groups of 2 participants, 20% for 3 participants.

    Scholarships

    The Summer School will be able to provide two scholarships under the condition that there are at least 20 registrations, and the applicants demonstrate high academic record and proof of economic inability. The scholarship covers only the tuition fee.
